Thinking of buying a boat this year? We’ve provided our trends and predictions and also our top tips for boat buyers.
2024 saw a shift in the boating market with boat prices beginning to stabilise, though still higher than pre-pandemic levels. With interest rates potentially easing mid-year, 2025 could see renewed buyer demand, potentially leading to a more balanced market and potentially stronger prices.
This could make now a favourable time to purchase.
Key Trends:
Sustainability
With rising costs, eco-consciousness is increasingly important. Consider boats with features like hybrid or electric engines, solar panels, and wind generators. We might even see boats utilising recycled plastics, bamboo, and other eco-friendly materials in their construction.
Look out for off-grid features on the listing, such as this Leopard 48.
Technology

Following the rise of AI, expect to see this technology integrated into boating. Features like AI-powered navigation, automated systems, collision avoidance, and even automated docking are on the horizon. Wouldn’t that be nice!
Enhanced connectivity, facilitated by technologies like Starlink, will enable remote work and seamless communication while at sea.
A lot of these may come in premium packages on new boats, or you may have the option of purchasing and adding them to your pre-owned purchase.
Check out this 2020 Riviera 43 or Power Play 63 if you’re looking for the latest technology without the new price tag.
Design & Comfort
Expect sleek designs, enhanced comfort, and open-plan living spaces. Customization options will increase, especially with the rise of “work-from-boat” lifestyles.
Yachts will likely feature more amenities and “toys” to capture attention and enhance the onboard experience.
For impressive design and comfort, we love this 2021 Lagoon 46.
Adventure

The focus is shifting beyond ownership towards unique experiences. Expect a demand for boats capable of accessing remote destinations, with features like long-range fuel tanks and ample space for toys and exploration.

Tips for Buying a Boat
- Define Your Needs & Budget
What will you use the boat for? (Fishing, cruising, watersports, etc.)
How often will you use it?
Where will you primarily be boating? (Coastal, offshore, etc.)
Set a realistic budget, factoring in ongoing costs like maintenance, fuel, insurance, and mooring (usually 10-15% per annum).
2. Explore Your Options
Research different boat types: motor yachts, sailboats, catamarans, fishing boats, etc. (Catamarans offer space and comfort, motor yachts provide speed, and sailing is often cost-effective.).
Consider new vs. used: New boats come with warranties and the latest features but can have long wait times (up to 18 months). (We currently have a Bali 4.4 arriving soon, if you’re interested in skipping the queue.) Used boats offer a lower price point and immediate availability.
For a good range of quality pre-owned yachts, we suggest having a look at these for sale.
3. Conduct Thorough Research
- Use YouTube, forums, etc.: See what other experts or boat owners are saying about specific models and brands.
- Visit boat shows: Get a firsthand look at different brands and models. It’s the best way to get on dozens of boats and help you decide what brand you prefer.
- A great idea is also to go charter a boat you think you might like and experience it for yourself. A little try before you buy.
- Due Diligence:
Survey & Sea Trial: We can’t recommend enough that you perform your due diligence before your final settlement. Have a qualified marine surveyor inspect the boat before making a purchase (if the seller doesn’t have one provided) and ensure you conduct a sea trial.
